NIAS WEEKLY SURF REPORT – 29 MAY TO 05 JUN

Monday 29th May
Fine morning with high tide the waves have started slowing back from the small tidal pulse of the last few days. Super-hot humid conditions around at present with clear skies, onshore South-East wind building up to lunch time with also building black storm clouds to the mountains in the NW give sign for some tropical rain storm and a wind shift offshore into the afternoon
Our local guests today from Jakarta are too sore from there new experience of surfing and decide to give the learners waves of the Lagundri a rest and opt for a trip to the village to see some traditional houses and stone jumping activity makes for a pleasant but hot day out
Thanks to our air- conditioning and a cool refreshing fresh coconut in the shade of the KabuNohi. Clear skies at night and the humid conditions have made it present star gazing from our view deck. Our staff and guests have been enjoying the interactions of this activity and teaching each other in their own language skills.
Tuesday 30th May
Overcast morning with signs of cloud and storms in the air, waves are smaller on the outside. Little action to note and the predicted big swell is the talk around town and a few cars with boards are arriving. Last week’s swell was a start of the stoke and the surf season is moving in and swell and wave trains moving higher into the Indian ocean will increase.
Wednesday 31st May
Strong wind and rain overnight from a deep low close to the Sumatran coast. Wave conditions are small with the localized storms pushing swell wide, wind remains in the N. North West blustery and some small waves on the inside and outside point to 4 feet
Conditions remain blustery with reports of a local vessel that carries cars to and from the Sumatran mainland to Nias has ran into rough seas on the overnight crossing forcing her to turn back to Sibolga. Several trucks on board were damaged.
This creates a problem for our present local guests who have driven across Sumatra in their own car from Medan. The bad weather rough seas and blustery winds have closed all marine operations form the ports in Nias and other outer islands
Thursday 1st June
Weather clears after a couple of big storm days. Surf is small off the point but the offshore makes the waves of good quality. Season moving in and an expected pulse during this weekend is anticipated. Today’s waves are a little bigger than yesterday swell prediction is looking excellent moving into the weekend
Moon first quarter
More people travelling through the area with nearly every day surfers and general travellers stopping by on the point in transit on their way to some surf adventure in the plentiful equatorial tropical island scattered in this region. The increasing cold as winter moves in on the southern hemisphere. Sorake in Nias is a melting pot for travelling surfers coming back or on their way from adventures in the outer island chains of to the west and south east (Telo group, Hinako group & The Banyak Islands). The local villagers are accustomed to surfers around and the local kids enjoy the interactions & the waves.
Friday 2nd June
Crisp offshore morning with the swell showing the signs of a pickup in the surf day. Waves around 4 to 5 feet are peeling across the point slow on the sets but the outside left hander and back reefs are alight with white water and increased wave action.
Slow sets during the day with swell still too arrive the making high late afternoon
Bali reports yesterday has solid sets, Nias will build during today for some thumping classic Nias over the weekend
Saturday 3rd June
Beautiful crisp offshore morning, 4 guys surfing the early 4-foot head high waves. There is predicted pulse to move in over the weekend. This morning waves are a little bigger but still no apparent movement to be noticed in the current. A few new surfer arrivals in anticipation of a new swell pulse. Mid-day the wind has pick up from the South East blowing out condition waves are still surf able with the now crumbly lips providing boost ramps for the fly boys. Afternoon wind swings back to the east waves remain the same still no sign of any pulse predicted for tomorrow
Sunday 4th June
Nice offshore morning alas no swell increase with wave remaining in the 4-foot mark with infrequent set, inside Kiddies corner is working so the Sunday morning array of local kids are spread throughout before they go to church.
The current surf prediction is looking for an increasing pulse into coming week, the lead up to the full moon on the 9th June will see consistent overhead waves off the Sorake Point and islands. Wind shift to South East and noticeable increase in the waves and sets.
Monday 5th June
Crisp clear morning with the offshore out the bay. Big jump overnight in swell size with some solid 8 ft plus waves cracking off the point. Low tide later today will sure have the action happening. The season is coming into full swing and the vibe when the surf jumps up like this makes the point full of energy with some action-packed surfing going to happen in the next days. Cameras and people around in anticipation of the rising swell & South African Matt Bromley “Bromdog” on the point for this swell and planning for a go at “Sobatu”!
